The excuse of a lifetime

Researchers at the University of Wisconsin released a study they contend shows that obesity is a result of a virus. According to the lead researcher Leah D. Whigham; “There are lots of factors contributing to the broad epidemic, but because of the rate of increase, it is very possible that it is partially due to an infectious disease.” Given that obesity is a clear and simple math problem (Fat = Caloric Intake - Caloric Burn) I am unsure what the researchers propose the effect of the virus actually is. Perhaps the virus drives the individuals to McDonalds for repeated late night snacks and discourages exercise of any kind.

Publishing this innane research is a disservice to all ‘weight challenged’ individuals in that it encourages them to somehow feel the condition is something they cannot address themselves. Allowing them to continue to ignore the problem and clear solution and wait for a solution to come from the medical community.

The vast majority of scientists contest this crazy hypothesis. “The obesity epidemic in the U.S. can be largely explained by our inactive, over-indulgent lifestyle behaviors,” said Lona Sandon, an assistant professor of clinical nutrition at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center, in Dallas.

Agreeing with Sandon is Dr. David L. Katz, director of the Prevention Research Center Yale University School of Medicine who says, “There are far more satisfying explanations for epidemic obesity, we have more calories available per capita per day than ever before in history. And more and more of those calories are packaged in highly processed, flavor-enhanced, processed foods.”

“We live in a profoundly ‘obesigenic’ world, one that makes weight gain the path of least resistance,” Katz said. “Any contribution that adenoviruses make to epidemic obesity is certain to be little more than specks of dust compared with these ‘obesigenic’ factors.”

Eat Less. Exercise more. Nuff said.
