iPort makes your iPod more useful

I recently had the opportunity to test a new product for the iPod. The iPort FS is a free standing iPod dock product that connects to the home entertainment system. This allows you to play any playlist (or shuffle the library) to your stereo. A remote control combines with the dock to allow you control of the Volume, Song, etc. from across the room.

The iPort is reasonably priced and allows you to listen to the variety of music on your ipod on your home stereo. If you have even a reasonably priced home stereo this allows for significantly better sound quality than any of the alternative iPod docks with speakers tacked on. The fact this device is a clean design with a capable remote control, charges your iPod while it is docked and can even connect to your home computer to enable music syncing makes this a good buy for anyone with an iPod.

Apple vs. The Media

After a blizzard of media stories about the recent malicious software and exploits targeting the Mac it is becoming clear to the more educated publications and reporters this is totally overblown. I surmise that the fact that someone has actually been able to create even a weak attack on Mac OS X is such a shock that instantly jumping in the ‘doom and gloom’ bandwagon is almost a reflex action for a reporter with a deadline.

BusinessWeek is amongst the first major publications to realize this level of coverage of essentially a “non-event” was misguided and note such in a story.

Software to track pursuit of women

Technology it is said “will change everything”. There was one area, where in my way of thinking, technology wouldn’t have direct impact - sex. Now I stand corrected. As a happily married man (and one who believes infidelity is totally inappropriate) I have not been involved in the dating scene in over a decade. ‘In the day’, I was as active as anyone in the pursuit of the fairer sex. My friends and I were active in the DC bar scene and went to Dewey Beach, DE virtually every summer weekend.

Until today I was unaware that technology was now available to increase the likelihood of sucessful dating ventures. Enter ‘Girlfriend X’. Apparently ‘Girlfriend X’ is an application and database designed to sort out and rate the women you are chasing and allow you to keep your life in some sort of order (at least in appearances). Sounds interesting for those males still looking for ‘Miss Right’; but I am happy to say that I am not going to be using this or any similar software to organize my life.

The Real Steve Jobs

There has been a lot of speculation on Steve Jobs over the years. Recently this has ramped up with Disney’s acquisition of Pixar. Based on the fact that the Pixar buy makes Steve the largest single stockholder of Disney more than one self proclaimed pundit has spectulated the Jobs will end up hammering the Disney executives.

Recently BusinessWeek’s Peter Burrows did an extensive Q&A with Edgar S. Woolard Jr. The former chief executive and chairman of chemical giant DuPont (DD) was also on Apple’s board and convinced Steve Jobs to return to Apple as CEO. This interview sheds a great amount of light upon Jobs approach and personality. A good friend of mine named Mitch Green also worked closely with Jobs at NeXT Computer (1989-1993). He concurs entirely with Woolard’s assessment of Steve making this a must read in my opinion.
