North West Adventure 2007

A couple of years ago, taking a river boat journey from New Orleans to St Louis, we discovered how pleasurable and informative river cruises could be. Late May and early June of this year, 2007, we confirmed that our Mississippi experience was not a fluke. Our venue this time was the Columbia and Snake rivers. This, our second river boat cruise, was just as enjoyable and informative as the first. The video covers highlights of our trip that included time in Portland and visit with nephew and niece in Seattle. Click on link that follows.

Thanksgiving 2006

A two-week-old quintuplet litter of Labrador puppies demanded and received much care and attention when Ellie and George spent Thanksgiving with daughter Trish and family in Christiansburg Virginia. Alison, a sophomore at William and Mary did not make it home for Thanksgiving. She was missed. The video , which follows, covers the highlights of the weeklong visit. The movie confirms that attention was centered on but not totally devoted to Star’s litter.

Hawaii revisited

My first visit to Hawaii was as a draftee on my way to Japan to participate in the Korean Police Action. The troop ship taking me from San Francisco to Yokohama stopped in Honolulu for two days. A sight seeing opportunity was thus provided. Wakiki Beach and it’s Royal Hawaiian Hotel made a enduring impression creating a desire to someday stay at the great hotel. This wish was fulfilled in May of 2006 when Ellie and I spent two nights at the historic luxury hotel. The opportunity to rekindle and realize my 1950s wish was an ancillary benefit to joining son John and his family for a week at a resort on Maui. The opportunity to spend quality time with John’s family on Maui and the chance to reminisce on Oahu made the Hawaii trip a great way to celebrate Ellie’s and George’s 50th wedding anniversary.

A synopsis of 2004

The year 2004, for the Florida residing Menkart family, was punctuated by uncontrolled and uncontrollable events. In February Ellie’s mother, Doris Feinsot, passed away at age 100. In May Ellie and George traveled to Rye NY to participate in a memorial service for Doris. Returning via Potomac MD allowed for a visit with son John’s family. Hurricane season made August and September exciting and led to a hastily scheduled visit to daughter Trish’s home in Christiansburg VA . As noted in another posted item Hurricane Ivan missed DeLand but found Ellie and George in Virginia.

Planned activities are closing out the year. A golf outing as part of a ten couple contingent was a November – December highlight. Towards the end of December Ellie and George are planning to drive to Christiansburg to celebrate Christmas with Trish’ family.

Most noteworthy this year are the accomplishments of grandchildren. Dan, Trish’s middle child, was selected as a baseball ALLSTAR and is a starter on the High School Junior Varsity basketball team. Kayla Trish’s youngest rode a horse in the Christiansburg Christmas parade. Alison received an acceptance of her William and Mary application for early placement. Nicole, John’s oldest, starred in a school play. The Twins started preschool.

Jeanne Repeats Frances Phenomena

A story widely reported in after the Northeast Blackout of 1965 recounted the experience of an elderly New Yorker. She placed two slices of bread in a pop up toaster, pushed the handle down and the lights went out. Looking out her window she noticed that street lights were out and all the windows she could see were dark. Her reaction: “WHAT HAVE I DONE?”.

Hurricane Frances and Jeanne provided two events, which caused me to recollect the elderly woman’s story:

Frances knocked out our electric service Sunday at about 9:30AM. Close to 4PM our next-door neighbor, David Winters phoned and offered to run a cord from his generator to our refrigerator. As David began the process of bringing the cord to our home our lights came on.

In anticipation of Jeanne David ran a cord from his front porch, the generators location, to our garage. Sunday at about 10AM our electric service was lost. A little after 2 in the afternoon David fired up the generator and almost simultaneously electric service was restored.

Clearly David Winters posses a most powerful generator.

Jeanne’s calling card … virtually no damage

Appointment in Samara

OUR EXPERIENCE WITH HURRICANE IVAN REMINDS ME OF THE TALE I READ MANY YEARS AGO AS A FOREWORD TO JOHN O’HARA’S BOOK “APPOINTMENT IN SAMARA”. THE TALE IS AS FOLLOWS:

A certain merchant in Baghdad sent his servant to the market to buy some provisions. A little while later, the servant returned looking white in the face. In a trembling voice he said, “Just now in the market place I was jostled by a man in the crowd, and when I turned I saw it was Mr. Death. He looked at me and made a threatening gesture. Please lend me your horse, because I want to go to Samara where Mr. Death will not be able to find me.”

The merchant agreed and lent the scared man his horse. The servant mounted the horse and rode away as fast as the animal could gallop. Later that day, the merchant went down to the market place and saw Mr. Death standing in the crowd. He approached him and said, “Why did you make a threatening gesture to my servant when you saw him this morning?”

“That was not a threatening gesture,” said Mr. Death. “It was only a start of surprise. I was astonished to see him in Baghdad, because I have an appointment with him tonight in Samara.”

ELLIE, CLEO (our cat) AND I DECIDED TO GET OUT OF IVAN’S WAY BY VISITING OUR DAUGHTER’S FAMILY IN CHRISTIANSBURG VIRGINIA. THE STORM MISSED DELAND BY HUNDREDS OF MILES BUT IVAN’S RAIN AND WINDS FOUND US IN SOUTHWESTERN VIRGINIA. OBVIOUSLY WE HAD AN APPOINTMENT IN CHRISTIANSBURG.
